How a suncatcher works

Each suncatcher is clear acrylic with the design printed on its frosted back. When the sun comes through, the printed colours light up like a small stained window and lay a tinted shadow on the sill and the floor.

The crystal drop hanging below does something different. Its cut faces bend each colour of sunlight by a slightly different amount, so the beam that goes in comes out as a fan of red through violet on the wall.

Where to hang a suncatcher

  • Find the direct sun

    A suncatcher needs sunlight landing on it, not just a bright room. Watch which pane the sun actually comes through, and at what hour.

  • East for mornings, west for evenings

    An east window lights up at breakfast, a west one before dinner. A south window in the northern half of the world gets the longest run of the day.

  • Let your suncatcher turn

    Hang it from one point with room to spin. A piece that moves sends its colours sweeping across the room, where a fixed one keeps them in one place.

Suncatcher questions, answered

Will a suncatcher work in a window with no direct sun?

Yes, in part. A printed acrylic suncatcher still glows in ordinary daylight, so it will look good in any window. Rainbows on the wall come from the crystal drop, and that needs a direct beam of sun to work.

Are these suncatchers made of glass?

No. Each suncatcher is 3mm acrylic with the design printed on the frosted back. Acrylic is much lighter than glass and far less likely to break, so a small suction hook is enough to hold it. The optional drop that hangs below is cut crystal.

How do I clean an acrylic suncatcher?

Wipe it with a soft cloth, dry or slightly damp. Do not use glass cleaner, alcohol or anything abrasive: they can cloud acrylic and wear the print on the back.

How long does a suncatcher order take?

Each one is printed and cut after you order it, which takes 2 to 3 business days. Delivery is then 5 to 10 business days, and you get a tracking link when it ships.
