Looking for a suncatcher for nursery windows? A printed acrylic one can be a gentle choice. Ours are made from 3mm clear acrylic, so they are light, they do not shatter, and they spill soft colour across the wall when morning sun comes through the window. This guide covers the material, where to hang it, which colours suit a baby's room, and how to keep it clean.
Why Acrylic Suits a Suncatcher for Nursery Rooms
A room with a baby or small child in it plays by different rules. Things get dropped, bumped and, sooner or later, grabbed. That is why the material matters as much as the design.
Every SunCatchery piece is 3mm clear acrylic. The design is printed on the frosted back, then the piece is cut to the outline of the design. It is not glass. Acrylic is lighter than glass and does not shatter, which is a fair comparison to make when you are choosing something for a room where an accident can happen.
Being light also makes hanging simple. A small suction hook is enough to hold it, so there is no heavy hardware and no drilling into a freshly painted wall. When you are ready to choose, you can look through the full collection and pick designs that suit the room.
One honest note: acrylic that does not shatter is still not a toy. Think of it as decoration for the window, something to look at, not something to hold.
Hanging It Out of Reach and Away from the Crib
Placement is the most important decision you will make. Hang the suncatcher high in the window, well above anywhere a child can reach, including when they are standing in the crib or, later, climbing on a chair.
It hangs from a chain, from one point. The window should get direct sun for part of the day, because that is when the colour glows most. Here is a simple checklist:
- Hang it high in the window, out of reach of a standing child.
- Keep it away from the crib: not above it and not right beside it.
- Use one hanging point and a short chain, with no loose lengths dangling.
- Press the suction hook on firmly, and check it now and then.
The cut crystal drop is optional. It hangs below the acrylic piece and is what throws rainbows, but only in direct sun. In a nursery you may prefer to leave it off, which keeps the piece smaller and the hanging length shorter. The acrylic on its own still gives a glow of colour.

Soft Colours for Morning Light
Morning sun is low and gentle, and many parents find it the nicest light in a nursery. A suncatcher catches that light and puts a soft wash of colour on the walls and floor, moving slowly as the sun climbs.
Because sunlight passes through the acrylic, colours look a little brighter on the wall than they do on a screen. If you want the room to stay restful, lean toward gentler tones:
- Pale blues and soft greens for a calm, airy feel.
- Warm yellows and creams for a sunrise glow.
- Blush pinks and lilacs for something sweet without being loud.
Subjects matter too. Clouds, moons, stars, leaves and small animals tend to feel at home in a child's room. Simple shapes in softer colour suit a room that is meant to be quiet, even at 3 a.m.
Remember that the acrylic gives the glow of colour, while rainbows come only from the optional crystal drop and only when direct sun hits it. Do not count on rainbows on a cloudy morning.
Cleaning It as Often as Everything Else in the Room
Nurseries collect dust, fingerprints and the occasional splash, and a suncatcher near the window is no exception. Add it to the same routine as the changing table and the windowsill, and it will stay bright.
Acrylic needs a lighter touch than most household surfaces. Use a soft cloth, dry or slightly damp, and plain water only. Please skip glass cleaner, alcohol and anything abrasive, because they cloud acrylic and wear the print.
- Take the suncatcher down gently, or reach it from a stable step.
- Wipe the front and back with a soft cloth, dry or slightly damp.
- Let it dry fully, then check the chain and the hook.
- Hang it again, high and out of reach.

If you are planning ahead for a due date or a baby shower, allow some time. Every piece is made to order by Merchize: 2 to 3 business days to make, then 5 to 10 business days for delivery. We ship within the US only, and shipping is free within the US.
A suncatcher for nursery use does not need to be fussy. Choose acrylic, hang it high and away from the crib, pick colours that suit the morning, and wipe it clean along with the rest of the room.
