A kitchen window suncatcher is a small thing to add to a room where you spend a lot of time standing still. You wash a pot, wait for the kettle, rinse a cup, and your eyes drift to the window. A piece of color hanging there gives that moment something to look at. This guide covers how to choose a design, how to keep it clean around steam and splatter, and how to hang it so it stays out of the way of the tap.
The window over the sink, and why it is usually the sunny one
In most homes the sink sits under a window, and that window is often one of the brighter spots in the house. Kitchens tend to be placed on a side of the house that gets good daylight, and the sink is often right at the glass. Your home may be different, so watch the window for a few days and note when direct sun actually lands on it.
This matters because of how the piece works. Our suncatchers are made from 3mm clear acrylic, with the design printed on the frosted back and the piece cut to the outline of the design. Daylight passing through it is what gives you the glow of color, and even bright light without direct sun will do that. The optional cut crystal drop that hangs below the acrylic is a separate job: it throws rainbows, but only when direct sun hits it.
So if your sink window gets an hour or two of direct sun, the rainbows will cross the counter, the cabinets and maybe the floor during that time. If it never does, you still get the glow, just without the moving rainbows.
Designs that suit food, plants and morning coffee
A kitchen is full of small, everyday things, and the designs that look best there tend to match. When you browse, these are good places to start:
- Fruit and citrus. Lemons, oranges and berries are warm, bright colors that glow nicely when morning light comes through.
- Herbs, leaves and potted plants. A green design looks natural next to a real basil or mint plant on the sill.
- Coffee and tea. A cup, a teapot or a coffee bean design suits the window you look at first thing.
- Flowers and garden scenes. Sunflowers and wildflowers bring a little of the outdoors to a room with no garden in it.
Think about color as well. Strong, saturated colors are easy to read from across the room, while pale ones look softer and more delicate. Warm shades feel cheerful in a morning kitchen, and cool greens and blues feel calm.
If you are not sure where to begin, you can look through every design in the shop and pick the one that matches your kitchen.
Keeping a kitchen window suncatcher clean near cooking steam
Kitchen air carries steam and a fine mist of cooking oil, and some of it lands on whatever hangs near the window. On a suncatcher this shows up as a light film or a few spots. It is normal, and it comes off easily.
Wipe the piece every week or two with a soft cloth, dry or slightly damp, using plain water only. If you cook a lot of fried food, check it a little more often. Go gently and let the cloth do the work.
The part to be careful about is the spray bottle under the sink. Do not use glass cleaner, alcohol or abrasives on an acrylic suncatcher. They cloud the acrylic and wear the print, and the damage is hard to fix. A scouring pad or a rough sponge counts as an abrasive too.
A little distance helps as well. If your window is right beside the stove, hang the piece toward the side away from the burners. For more on routine care, see our hanging and care guide.
Hanging it where it will not swing into the tap
A suncatcher hangs from a chain, from one point, so it can swing a little when the window opens or someone walks past. Over a sink, you want that swing to have nowhere to hit.
Acrylic is light, so a small suction hook is enough. Hang the piece high in the window, where the sun reaches it for part of the day. Before you stick anything up, run through these steps:
- Raise the tap to its highest point and swing it side to side. Note how far it reaches.
- Hold the suncatcher, with its crystal drop if you have one, up to the window and check that the lowest point sits well above the tap.
- Place the hook near the top of the window, off to one side if the tap sits in the middle.
- Give it a gentle nudge. If it brushes anything, move the hook or shorten the chain.
Each piece is made to order by Merchize, so allow 2 to 3 business days to make it, then 5 to 10 business days for delivery. We ship to US addresses only, and shipping is free within the US.
