A print on demand suncatcher is one that does not exist yet when you click order. At SunCatchery, every piece is made after someone buys it. That is a different way of selling, and it changes a few things about what you get and when. Here is what it means in plain terms.
A print on demand suncatcher: nothing sits on a shelf waiting
In a traditional shop, pieces are made in batches, boxed, and stored until a buyer turns up. Some wait on a shelf for months. Ours do not. Our suncatchers are made to order by Merchize, the company that produces them for us. Your order starts the process. The design is printed on the frosted back of a piece of 3mm clear acrylic, and then the piece is cut to the outline of the design.
Because acrylic is not glass, the finished piece is lighter and does not shatter. That is a fair thing to value in something that hangs in a window and might get bumped or handled. If you choose the optional cut crystal drop, it hangs below the acrylic piece. The acrylic gives the glow of color. The crystal drop is what throws rainbows, and only when direct sun reaches it.
The practical upside is simple. Your suncatcher is made for you, not pulled from a stockroom where it has been sitting. Nobody has to guess in advance how many of each design to produce, so nothing is made that no one asked for.
Why that lets a shop offer many designs
Holding stock is expensive. A shop that keeps inventory has to pick a small number of designs and hope they sell. Every extra design means more boxes, more space and more risk.
Made to order removes most of that worry. A design only costs the shop effort when someone actually wants it, so the range can be much wider. That is why you can browse the full collection and find animals, night sky scenes, seasonal pieces and more, all in one place.
For you as a shopper, that comes down to a few things:
- More choice, so you can match a piece to your window, your home or the person you are buying for.
- Room for smaller, more specific themes that would never justify a big stocked batch.
- No picking from whatever happens to be left over in a warehouse.
A wide range also makes gifting easier. Instead of settling for something close, you can look for a design that fits the person: their favorite animal, a season they love, or a place that matters to them.
The trade off: a few days to make
Here is the honest part. Because nothing is sitting on a shelf, your suncatcher has to be made before it can ship. That takes 2 to 3 business days.
Business days means weekdays, so weekends and public holidays do not count. An order placed late on a Friday may not start its making time until the following Monday.
In practice, this means a print on demand suncatcher is not a last minute purchase. If you need something in your hands by a specific date, such as a birthday or a holiday, order early and leave yourself room. If you are simply decorating a window for yourself, a few days is rarely a problem.
We think the trade is worth it. You get a fresh piece with a design you actually chose, and the shop does not have to fill a warehouse with pieces that may never be wanted.
What to expect between ordering and delivery
Once you order, there are two stages:
- Making: your piece is printed and cut, which takes 2 to 3 business days.
- Delivery: it then travels to you, which takes 5 to 10 business days.
Put together, expect roughly 7 to 13 business days from order to your door. That is a range, not a guarantee, so give yourself some buffer if there is a date involved.
Shipping is US only, and it is free within the US. You can read the details, including returns, on our shipping and returns page.
It helps to treat the wait as a small project: choose the design, pick your window, and decide where it will hang while you wait. That way it goes up the day it arrives.
Hanging it is easy. Use a chain from one point, high in a window that gets direct sun for part of the day. Acrylic is light, so a small suction hook is enough. To keep it looking good, wipe it with a soft cloth, dry or slightly damp, using plain water only. Glass cleaner, alcohol and abrasives can cloud the acrylic and wear the print.
If you are ready to look, start with the full collection and pick the design that suits your window. We will make it once you do.
